Gardeners Harrow is committed to providing gardening and grounds care services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public. We recognise our duty to comply with relevant health and safety legislation and to follow industry best practice across all gardening and outdoor maintenance work.

This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with gardening services, including the use of machinery, tools, vehicles, chemicals, and working in outdoor environments. The policy applies to all employees of Gardeners Harrow and to any contractors working on our behalf.

Health and Safety Objectives

Our objectives are to prevent injury, ill health, property damage and environmental harm arising from our activities. We aim to achieve this by identifying hazards, assessing risks, implementing control measures and monitoring performance to support continual improvement in our safety standards.

We will ensure that health and safety considerations are integrated into the planning and delivery of all gardening services, from routine maintenance visits to larger landscaping projects.

Management Responsibilities

Management at Gardeners Harrow holds overall responsibility for health and safety performance. This includes providing appropriate resources, equipment and training so that work can be carried out safely and effectively.

Managers will:

Ensure that risk assessments are completed for key gardening activities, such as hedge trimming, lawn care, planting, tree work and the use of powered machinery. Provide and maintain safe equipment and tools, including regular inspection, servicing and replacement where necessary. Establish clear safe systems of work and communicate them to all staff. Monitor compliance with this policy through supervision, site visits and feedback from workers and clients. Review this policy regularly and update it in line with changes in legislation, guidance or the nature of our work.

Employee Responsibilities

Every employee of Gardeners Harrow has a duty to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Employees must follow all safety instructions and training provided and must not misuse or interfere with any safety equipment.

Employees are expected to:

Use tools, machinery and personal protective equipment as instructed. Report hazards, near misses, accidents or defective equipment to management at the earliest opportunity. Co operate with management in the implementation of this policy and any related procedures. Maintain tidy and orderly work areas to reduce trip and slip risks. Consider the safety of clients, neighbours and passers by when working on or near gardens, driveways, pavements and shared spaces.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

We carry out risk assessments for regular gardening activities and for any non routine work. These assessments consider factors such as terrain, weather, access, visibility, manual handling requirements and the presence of services or utilities.

Safe systems of work are developed and implemented for tasks including lawn mowing, strimming, hedge cutting, pruning, digging, planting, pressure washing and the movement of soil, plants and materials. Where appropriate, work areas are cordoned off or clearly indicated to protect the public.

Additional controls are applied for higher risk activities such as working at height, tree work and the use of powered cutting equipment. These tasks are only undertaken by suitably trained and competent staff using appropriate protective equipment.

Use of Machinery, Tools and Vehicles

All machinery and tools used by Gardeners Harrow are selected, maintained and operated with safety as the primary consideration. Equipment is inspected regularly and taken out of service if any defect that may compromise safety is identified.

First aid supplies are available to our teams, and staff are made aware of emergency procedures, including how to obtain medical assistance and how to respond to incidents involving members of the public while work is in progress.
